The Brief:

Perth Cultural Center approached Icon AV after a working relationship through other events completed in the precinct. The Rio Tinto christmas lights trail is for all people to experience lighting installations through the city, and activate spaces. Perth Cultural Center was looking to activate their courtyard area with a fixed lighting and sound installation, which was interactive and could be photographed well.

The Solution:

After a site visit and an area explanation, Icon AV designed and specified a geodesic dome structure to resemble an igloo, with full pixel mapped digital LEDs and a custom fabricated control system specifically for the project.

We completed engineering and safety documentation to ensure that the structure would be safe to install over a month long period.

Over a period of a week, our crew installed and commisioned the full lighting and sound installation, with input from stakeholders in the area, and with creative input from the Perth Cultural Center.

We used WS2811 Pixel Orbs and 1m and 0.5m pixel tubes to surround the Pixel Igloo, and custom built a sACN pixel node for pixel control.

We programmed a Qlab Mac in a sonnet rack to run the pixel control through Resolume Arena, and run the timer for the shows. Qlab also took care of the audio tracks, of which there was a main track and an ambient track that rotated on a 2 minute timer through the evening starting at 7pm.

Using our stock of Dynacord amplifiers with EV passive outdoor speakers, hidden under fabric, we created a soundscape with no visible speakers.

We also used our new stock of Beamz Pro wash lighting and Lumen Radio to bring added colour to the area surrounding the igloo.

The Result:

The resulting installation captivated people as they made their way through the Christmas lights trail. The team at Perth Cultural Center were overjoyed with the outcome of the project.
